Posture

Maintaining good posture while sitting, walking & standing helps with proper body alignment & adds to your sense of well-being. You will look more confident & your clothes will fit better.

If you have problems with your posture, make an effort each day to practice correct posture.

Good Posture:
  • helps prevent fatigue
  • improves your personal appearance
  • allows elegant movement
  • helps with proper body alignment
  • adds to your sense of well-being
  • makes you look & feel more confident
  • is an important part of personal care
  • assists prevention of physical disturbances
  • contributes to good habits
  • helps build good health
  • improves your speech

Avoid slouching, humped shoulders & curvature of your spine

To stand & walk correctly:
  • distribute you body weight properly - whilst standing for long periods of time, weight should be distributed to the balls of your feet, make sure your feet are close enough together to avoid the weight on your heels.
  • attain good body balance – place one of your feet slightly ahead of the other (standing with your feet side by side causes fatigue because your body isn’t aligned properly).
Basic stance: – make this a daily habit & you will be keeping your body in alignment, preventing fatigue, headaches & back pain.
This stance allows you to shift your weight easily from one foot to the other:
  • turn your left foot on an angle (45 degrees)
  • point your right foot straight ahead (with your heel at the instep of your left foot)
  • it is usually more comfortable to place your right foot a few centimetres in front of your left
  • keep your knees flexed with your right knee bent inwards
  • (place the left foot forward, angling your right foot when practical)
  • don’t place your feet side by side when you need to bend over as this will result in back strain
Good posture rules
Carry the weight on the balls of your feet
Keep your knees flexed
Keep your shoulders back
Hold your stomach muscles in (abdomen)
Hold your head high (I imagine pulling on a piece of string in the centre of my head)
Correct posture whilst sitting:
  • place your feet directly under your knees on the floor
  • makes sure the seat is even with your knees (allowing your legs a 90 degree angle at the knees)
  • carry the weight of your thighs on your feet
  • rest the weight of your torso (trunk of your body) on your thighs (not on your spine)
  • keep your torso upright
Taking care of your feet:
  • avoid extremely ‘high’ heels
  • buy well-fitted shoes
  • keep your toenails filed smooth
  • get treatment from a podiatrist for corns, bunions & ingrown nails
  • ease weak & flat feet through – professional massage, exercise, arch supports & proper shoes
  • get professional consultations with a foot specialist for weak feet, fallen arches & flat feet

Hold yourself up straight, with your head back & your chin tucked in – to prevent poor thinking by lack of blood supply to your brain
